The Department of English and Cultural Studies, in consonance with its mission statement, is committed to promoting an intellectual climate through artistic creation, critical mediation and innovative ideation. It inculcates among its students a critical reading of the self, the society and the imagined with the aim of moulding them into responsible and socially sensitive citizens. The Department facilitates their holistic development by building emotional, academic, social, professional and global competencies. The Department aspires to create a nuanced understanding of canonical and non-canonical literary and cultural texts, their social milieu for an engaged and enduring understanding of life.
Headed by Dr. Arun D M and ably supported by a dedicated team the Department continues to strive, explore and achieve.
The Department promotes an intellectual climate of critical and creative ideation by inculcating among its students the habit of a critical reading of the word and the world alike. It has geared its academic engagements towards moulding students into responsible and socially sensitive citizens through programs that are designed to facilitate holistic development.
We offer courses that support English language competence across the University, using relevant and digital modes as well as conventional methods developing and producing our own content and materials. The department offers programs at the under graduate, post graduate and doctoral levels with courses dedicated to the intersections of Gender, Spatiality, Ecology and Service Learning, exploring newer modes and fields of narratives and the concerns of these developments. We provide extension services and consultancies through our in-house Incubation Cell. Apart from academic writing, our faculty is graced by poets, novelists, translators and writers and most of us are connoisseurs of the Arts. We support Art and the Artists through festivals, deliberations and other avenues of creative partnerships. Our students are sojourners with us in this quest for Beauty and Truth… thoughts and ideas being the hope for the betterment of Self and Society, persuaded by Dostoevsky that ‘Beauty will save the world’ … the beauty of the human spirit, the relentless pursuit of truths in the hope eternal of a better world.
Towards critically reading Self, Society and the Imagined.
The Department of English Studies aspires to promote an intellectual climate through artistic creation, critical mediation and innovative ideation in a culture of reciprocal transformation.
